Custom officials in Southern China stopped a man trying to smuggle thousands of memory cards into the mainland, state broadcaster CCTV news reported.

The man had taped more than 9,000 mobile phone memory cards to his body as he tried to enter Shenzhen from Hong Kong on Friday.

The cards were worth nearly 100,000 yuan (HK$118,000), according to the report.

One Custom official said the man offered them a 50,000 yuan bribe when he was caught.

Hours earlier, Shenzhen Customs also caught an elderly woman who tried to smuggle more than 10,000 phone memories cards taped to her waist and legs.

Custom officials at the border crossing regularly catch people attempting to smuggle electronic products like iPhones into the mainland.

Foreign brand electronics are normally sold at lower price in Hong Kong, a duty free port with no sales tax, than in the mainland.
